Inside the Chin Studio

Ray and MaryBeth Chin and their daughters, Chloe ‘20 and Tessa ‘23, have been a fixture on the Maui Prep campus for more than a decade. The Chins bleed Pueo green, giving hundreds of hours to the PTSO, Booster Club, and the Board of Trustees, and any other need they see. Ray Chin still serves as Maui Prep’s unofficial official photographer, capturing hundreds of thousands of images of students at work. However, the Pueo Arts program is where the Chins have left their permanent mark. “MaryBeth and I have always been passionate about The Arts,” comments Ray. “Our daughters have embraced this same passion for The Arts as we all believe it is key to growth and success.”

Even as the sun set on their girls’ Maui Prep academic careers and Ray’s extended service to the Board of Trustees, the Chin name continues to be a part of daily conversation on the Maui Prep campus through the classroom in the Bozich Center that bears the family’s name. In 2019, the Chins made a donation for the room, naming it the Chin Studio. “The Bozich Center has been a game changer for our school. It has given our athletes and artists a platform to compete or perform,” notes Ray.  “But before a student-artist performs their talents, they need a place to learn, exercise, and develop their craft.”

In 2023, the Chins teamed with the Arts Department to honor an exemplary performing and visual arts student each school year, announcing the winners at the Athletic and Arts Awards Night in May, and then displaying the artwork and performer’s portrait for a full school year. “The newly established tradition of highlighting fine arts and performing arts students (and their work) was born from the desire to create recognition of our talented student-artists,” comments Ray.  The cast of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Artist Rebekah Ankney ‘24 (pictured at right) were selected at the end of the 23-24 school year, succeeding the inaugural winners Tessa Chin (Performing Arts) and Margaux Perchard ‘23 (Visual Arts). MaryBeth Chin is proud of their lasting legacy on the Maui Prep campus, a place that the couple diligently served and championed for many years. “The room has many uses and I love the fact that ‘The Chin Studio’ is said multiple times a day on campus by students and teachers,” comments MaryBeth. “It is a classroom, an art gallery, a test center, a dance room, a warm-up and PT room, a room for umpires and sports officials to debrief, a book fair center, and more!”
